Getting a Twin of you (FAQs)

Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions (FAQs). Before you come in for your 3D photo session, please take a moment to read all of the following helpful pointers. Just click the "plus" symbols.

Can you make a 3D Twin from a regular photograph?: The answer is both Yes and No. Yes, we can make a 3D Twin of you holding a regular photo but no, we can't turn a regular photo into 3D. Here's what's going on:

Your figurine can show you holding a photo the way that this one shows them holding a sign.

Yes, we can make a 3D Twin figurine of you holding a regular photo.

In this case, the people or pets in the photo won't be turned into three dimensions, but the photo itself will be part of your 3D figurine, like a sign that you're holding. Here's what you need to do:

Have the photo enlarged. The enlarged photo should be slightly less than the width of your body. If you have more than one person in your scan, it should be at least as wide as the width of one person. It should be in focus, have good contrast, and should not have a glossy finish.

Have the enlarged photo mounted on 1-inch think posterboard or styrofoam. It should not be deeply mounted in a frame, and not mounted under glass or plastic. A deep frame can cause unwanted shadows. Glass or plastic can cause unwanted reflections.

When you get your 3D scan, hold the enlarged photo close to your body, in plain view.

You'll get the best results if you order one of the larger sizes so that the photo that you're holding can be seen more clearly.

When you get your figurine, it will show off both you and your photo.

No, we can't turn a regular photo into 3D.

A regular photograph is created with just one camera in one position. We use 89 computer-synchronized cameras and 6 projectors, positioned all around you on 17 metal columns. The cameras are mounted to capture high, low, front, back and side views of you. The projectors are used to project a 360 degree pattern map onto you from different angles. This adds additional data about dimensions and depth. Even though everything happens in less than a second, all of these images and all of this information are required to make a 3D Twin.
What should I bring to my appointment?: You need only to bring or come wearing the outfit you'd like to get scanned in. If you decide to purchase a 3D color figurine or a glass 3D Crystal after your scanning session, please have a form of payment handy. Credit and debit cards are easiest for us, and we accept all major cards.
What should I wear when I come for my scan?: Our 3D color figurines look their best when you look your best, whatever that means to you. The more colors, patterns, and textures worn to your 3D scanning session, the better! On the other hand, be aware that our glass 3D Crystals don't reproduce colors. So just in case, go ahead and wear your colorful garb. That way, you can decide later to get either a 3D color figurine or a glass 3D Crystal. Just be aware that there are a few materials our scanner can't replicate:

Highly reflective materials such as patent leather, polished metal, sequins, and glitter.

Glasses with subtle frames are difficult for the 3D camera to capture. The thicker and darker the frames, the better the chance the scanner will have at capturing them.

Hats with a thin brim. Baseball caps should be worn backwards, removed, or should be held to your chest while scanning.
What should I expect from a 3D figurine or glass 3D Crystal?: We guarantee that your Twin will always be a delight to behold. That said, there are a few key aspects of our products to keep in mind:

Due to the current limitations of our 3D technology, any item smaller than roughly one inch in diameter cannot be guaranteed to appear in the final product. This includes fine or small pieces of jewelry, tassels, strings, etc. Extended fingers are usually an exception to this rule when printed at a large enough size, although at the 3-inch or 5-inch size, separate fingers cannot be replicated individually. In those small sizes, finer details of a face may also not print.

For that reason as well, the details on your Twin will not be as crisp as your own details are in reality. On a 3D color figurine, the fine aspects of any given pattern, especially of something like a tattoo, may not be captured and reproduced accurately. If you get very close to a 3D color figurine, it's quite normal to be able to see its tiny printed layers (at 0.0625 inch each) and to feel the rough texture of the powder that it's made of. The outside of the glass 3D Crystals, of course, are much smoother.

Finally, the precise hues of your clothing and skin on a 3D color figurine may not look exactly as they do in reality… but they’ll come pretty darn close.
How long does it take to get my Twin?: Taking the 3D scan only takes a few minutes, and your Twin will then be shipped directly to you. The turn around time for 3D color figurines is usually 2 to 3 weeks from the time you take your image to the time that it ships. We expect that the turn around time for glass 3D Crystals will be much less.
How much does it cost to get a Twin made?: Price list amended November 18, 2016.

Like some of the airlines, we define "1 person" as being a single person or a single person holding a baby. Unlike the airlines, we allow you to hold a very small pet or two.
