At the heart of any RV is the electrical energy system. It determines what the van is able to do once you park it. How it works can be confusing, so here's a brief explanation.
Basically, your RV electrical energy system has three separate parts.
1. A 12-volt DC automotive system. This is sometime called the chassis system. On your DreamVan, it's essentially the electrical system and electrical components that come from Ford. It includes the main alternator, the main battery and the ignition switch. They power things like the radio, headlights, turn signals, taillights, dashboard, and the built-in air conditioning inside the cab.

2. A 12-volt DC system for your coach. The coach in an RV is the part where you live. It includes the bedroom, bathroom, and living areas. Your coach system gathers energy from solar panels, a traditional generator mounted in a compartment on the coach, and from an auxiliary alternator (if you have one).
When th engine is running, an auxiliary alternator is connected to the engine via a fan belt. The Ford's engine causes its innards to turn and then it generates power that's stored in your coach battery.
This power is eventually used by your RV's inside and patio lights, your appliances, your heater, and your rooftop air conditioner. This energy is stored in a coach battery that's separate from the battery from Ford. Interior coach lights, patio lights, and some appliances may get energy from this system.

3. A 120-volt AC coach system. This is equivalent to the 120 volt AC coach system in your house. Energy from the 12-volt DC coach system is converted to 120-volt AC via a device called an inverter. Appliances are run off of this system. Things connected to it are sometimes called "on the inverter." That just means that they use 120-volt AC instead of 12-volt DC. A "pure sine wave" inverter puts out AC power that's just like the power in your home. Computers and other high-end electrical devices often require this type of AC power. Some may be damaged if they don't get it.

DreamVans is a fictional recreational vehicle manufacturer. If it were real, it would feature the best ideas and the best technology in the global RV industry today. These innovations have been combined into the models shown on this site. To keep things simple, these DreamVans are all based on the gasoline powered Ford Transit commercial van. Ford Transit features are gathered from various Transit models around the globe. This site uses information and photos from several sources, and photos may not reflect details of a particular brand.
